The pale wing panel, and other Tit shortcuts

Voice is the surest way through the confusing tits, but sometimes a bird stays silent and you want an answer anyway. A handful of plumage and structure shortcuts will carry you a long way while you wait for a call.

The pale panel on the folded wing is the classic one: a soft, light patch on the secondaries that a Willow Tit tends to show and a Marsh Tit tends to lack. It is strongest on fresh birds and worth checking every time.

Build a small checklist

Cap gloss, the size of any bib, the heaviness of the neck and head, the presence of a wing panel: none is proof on its own, but together they build a confident case. Run them in the same order each time and the routine becomes automatic.

Then let the bird call, and let the voice confirm what the marks suggested. Sight and sound, checking each other, is how field skill is actually built.
